New Airwave Sport Here Soon
The Sport M has been certified DHV 1-2. Airwave expects to certify a total of five sizes. There’s been a great deal of interest in this glider. Many dealers have requested a demo, and we’ve received a pile of e-mails from interested pilots. The first two Sports will arrive here in about a week. Mitch will do his best to ship these gliders around as quickly as possible, but clearly it will take some time. Airwave’s designer, Bruce Goldsmith, has assured us that he is really satisfied with every aspect of the glider so we are ordering more, before we’ve even flown one!

Mitch Relates To The Arcus
It’s been a great season of flying, and it’s still going great! I got to 10,200 at the E last Friday! But, there’s no denying fall is here, the days are shorter, shadows longer, and I’m compelled to reflect on the past season’s flights. I’d like to relate a story of my last flight on an Arcus.
This Saturday didn’t look that good, I worked a little later finishing up an Arcus M repair and even though I didn’t see any gliders getting high over the E, I went to the LZ. in the hope of getting a flight.
There were a lot of gliders landed and breaking down, with only one hang glider still up, low over the saddle. I grabbed Big Al to drive for me, and raced up the hill. On launch one hang glider pilot was breaking down as the wind swirled around, mostly 2-5 mph down, sometimes cross, and every ten minutes it would go dead on top and trickle up the face. I threw the Arcus out and got hooked in just in time for a good solid down cycle to begin to blow the glider into a pile sliding down on top of me and the lines on the steep, sandy launch face. The pilots that were left up on take off humored me, out of morbid curiosity and sympathy for my insanity, and helped to stretch it back out and hold it down for several minutes until the down cycle slacked and it began to waffle north-cross with some up the face, and only one or two down on top.
A good hard run and the Arcus came up fine, a little soft, a little horseshoe, but by the bottom of the launch run it straightened and flew away from the hill. There was only a 5 mph down prevailing, and not much rotor; the Arcus didn’t even feel it. I began to relax halfway out to the E cone. There was small, strong lift at the cone, and coring up through the shear from the lee of the hill into the downwind was not any more exciting than the launch, the glider just soaks up the bumps and never even rolled in the outside tip. I worked the one thermal up 4500′ to about 6500′ ASL all by myself, the last pilots finished breaking down, retrieved their cars and left the takeoff area vacant as I drifted away from the hill and out over the lake. What a cool glider, so much more relaxing than the 2-3 and the comp wings that have been the cause of a great deal of anxiety in dead and down launch conditions like this day. I could get to like this, maybe some day when good sense gets the better of me.
