Mitch McAleer Goes To Garmish
We’re sure Mitch will be the hit of the show in Germany at the annual Free Flight exhibition. He’ll be doing some hang gliding aerobatic demos and checking out the latest HG and PG gear. Watch for a report in the next news-letter.
HANG GLIDER NEWS:
Release of the Falcon 2!
We are announcing to the dealers at this time the release of the new Falcon 2 model line. The Falcon 2’s will be produced in the same four sizes as the original Falcons – 140, 170, 195 and 225 – and represent a comprehensive upgrade and re-design of the most popular and most successful glider we’ve ever produced. The public release announcement of the Falcon 2’s will happen in the first week in April, demos will be available at the Wallaby demo days April 4th through April 7th, and the April issue of Hang Gliding Magazine will carry an ad for the new models.
Notable New Design Features of The Falcon 2
- Full length leading edge mylar pocket and insert (replaces the individual mylar pockets/inserts at each batten station) for a visually and aerodynamically cleaner leading edge.
- Spring tip battens – for that clean, “high performance” look at the trailing edge. No protruding batten ends or dangling strings
- All full chord battens are now 7075 – No more hassling with the softer 6061 battens on the 195 and 225 models.
- Significantly improved sail cut for cleaner sails in flight
- Smaller AT 65 size control bar on the Falcon 225 for easier ground handling, launch and landing.
Flight Performance Improvements on the Falcon 2
- Stall speed is reduced as much as 2 mph on each size. The Falcon 2 170 has the same stall speed with a 215 lb hook in weight pilot as the original Falcon 225 has with the same weight pilot!
- Stall character is also improved – the separation is more gradual and the re-attachment of flow is more immediate, which results in an even greater expansion to the lower end of the speed range.
- More soaring performance – better climb rates in all thermal strengths, soarable performance in weaker lift.
- Expanded upper weight range – a pilot in the overlap portion of the weight range between sizes can now elect the smaller size without any loss in climb performance or soaring capability, while realizing all of the advantages in handling and glide performance at speed that come with flying a smaller glider.
- Improved handling – Hard to believe, but the Falcon 2’s actually handle better than the original Falcons – which have generally been regarded as the best handling gliders there are! Better handling means better soaring performance and more fun.
What Hasn’t Changed
- Same great quality of materials and construction. All sails cut on our new Autometrix computerized cutting table, all frames drilled on our custom built automated drilling machine.
- 7075 T-6 leading edges and keels on all sizes for superior strength to weight ratio.
- Same light weight, great static balance, easy ground handling, launching and landing characteristics.
- Fully Load Tested and Pitch Tested to current industry standards on our world class 3-axis electronic test vehicle (the same vehicle design purchased by both the German DHV and British BHPA for their hang glider vehicle testing).
Robert Reisinger Joins the Wills Wing Competition Team
World Class competition pilot Robert Resinger has been here in California working with WW designer Steve Pearson on continuing improvements to the Talon. Robert, who placed third in the last World Championships, is a highly competitive pilot with lots of energy and good ideas. Watch for him at the major comps this year. Many other top pilots have chosen to fly on the team again this year. Jim Lee, Chris Arai, Nene Rotor, Richard Walbec, Chris Muller, Françoise Mocellin, Terry Presley and Jamie Stinnett will also fly Talons this year. We are honored that these great pilots have chosen to fly our gliders!
Talon Updates
The latest Talons are looking cleaner, flying sweeter and performing better than ever. Craig Warren, a Santa Barbara pilot recently set a new Santa Barbara area XC record with a 101 mile flight on his second flight on his new Talon 160! We’ve been receiving numerous reports from very satisfied Talon customers over the last several weeks. Available in three sizes – the Talon is the most refined, competition class and ultra performance recreational soaring glider we’ve ever made – and at least the equal of any other glider out there. And it’s backed by the quality, service and support you’ve come to expect from Wills Wing.
PARAGLIDING NEWS:
We have our first Swing Astral 3’s on the way to us at this time. We’re looking forward to flying this latest Swing design – it’s already creating a great deal of interest.
Also on the way to us is our next batch of Airwave Sports and Logics, including our first Sports in the XL size.
Within a couple of weeks, we should have almost all currently available sizes of all Swing and Airwave models in stock.
We wish you a safe and successful season!
